Your guide to the best of Belfast…
BELFAST’S ‘MUST-SEE’ ATTRACTION
The Titanic Signature Project
Belfast city - the birthplace of fated ship Titanic- has seen the opening of the new Titanic Signature project in April 2012 -Titanic’s centenary year. This iconic building located in the Titanic Quarter of the city (only 10 minutes from Ramada Encore Belfast) will showcase the story of the Titanic and the history of shipbuilding Belfast, including the engineering, industrial, social, cultural and economic origins and connections. 2012 also welcomes a calendar of events and festivals to celebrate the centenary year.
The Crumlin Road Gaol
The Crumlin Road Gaol dates back to 1845 and closed it's doors as a working prison in 1996. After extensive renovations the gaol has re opened as a visitor attraction and conference centre and is now a ‘must-see’ for tourists to Belfast. Today you can take a guided tour of the prison and hear about the history of the site from when women and children were held within its walls through to the political segregation of republican and loyalist prisoners and learn about why the decision was taken to close the prison.
During the tour of the gaol you will be taken by your tour guide to visit the underground tunnel that used to connect the gaol to the Crumlin Road Courthouse, you will get a chance to sit in the Governor's chair, view all the wings from the circle and of course pay a visit to the condemned man’s cell before seeing the execution cell where the majority of the 17 men were hanged.
This new six storey building located in St. Anne’s Square, Cathedral Quarter has two theatres, three major visual art galleries, a dance studio, education, workshop and rehearsal spaces, offices for resident arts groups as well as a resident artist and a cool café and bar.
The MAC is now open and offering a world-class programme ranging from blockbuster events and exhibitions to challenging, experimental new works. Across all its spaces The MAC celebrates and showcases the very best in home-grown arts and culture as well as bringing the rest of the world to Belfast.
Restored to her original 1911 glory and back home in Belfast, a visit to Nomadic allows you to experience what it was like to be a passenger boarding Titanic as it was this ship that ferried passengers to Titanic on her fateful maiden voyage.
